I think this should be optional as some people like this and others may find it overwhelming to receive emails in their already full inboxes when PT already offer the "red dot" as a trigger that you a new email.

When someone is on leave/sick we can view that portfolios messages but cannot respond to clients as not in the users name assisting.
Can it be the same as communications platform where you can review other messages an respond as the user when needed.
